Statesville Landmark, 15th—Mr. W.H. McElwee died suddenly Wednesday afternoon about 4:30 o’clock at Cowards, S.C. Funeral services will be held at the home on Water street, tomorrow morning at 12 o’clock. Interment in Oakwood.
The news of Mr. McElwee’s death was received here a few minutes after it occurred and came as a distinct shock to his relatives and friends. He left here afternoon, in his automobile, for South Carolina, where he had business interests. A dispatch from Cowards says that he was driving through the streets of that town, accompanied by Mr. E.L. Montgomery, and without a word, Mr. McElwee suddenly released the steering wheel and slumped down in his seat, falling over against Mr. Montgomery, who grasped the wheel in time to prevent a wreck.
On receipt of the news of his death, his son, William H. McElwee Jr., his brother, Mr. John H. McElwee, and brother-in-law, Mr. W.E. Selby, left in an automobile for Lake City, S.C., where the body was taken. The remains were to arrive here tonight on No. 35.
Mr. McElwee had suffered from high blood pressure but his condition had improved to such an extent that his death was entirely unexpected.
Mr. William Henry McElwee was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. McElwee and was born at the old Simonton place, near Statesville, July 2, 1865. He attended the local schools and was a student at the University of North Carolina for two years. After leaving the University, he worked for a number of years in the Southern railway office at Greensboro. Later he was in business at Ronda, Wilkes county; in Statesville for a short while; then to Raleigh with the Atlantic Lumber Company. Recently he organized the Consolidated Lumber Company at Bichland and Cowards, S.C.
Mr. McElwee married Miss Bessie Cranor of Wilkes county. He is survived by his wife, one son, W.H. McElwee Jr., and two daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth McElwee. Also, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. McElwee; two brothers—Mr. John N. McElwee and Dr. Ross S. McElwee—and three sisters—Miss Mamie McElwee, Mrs. D.S. Thomas and Mrs. W.E. Selby.
