Folks in Blowing Rock Could Hear Grandfather Mountain Fire 18 Miles Away, Aug. 21, 1925

Less Danger Seen from Forest Fires Near Blowing Rock. . . Reported Today that Fire Has Moved in Circle and Is Smoking Out Its Own Fury Now. . . Roaring Blaze Makes Noise. . . Said Fire Can be Heard at Blowing Rock, Which is 18 Miles from the Blaze

Hickory, Aug. 21 (AP)—The raging fire on Grandfather Mountain burned around in a circle last night and is slowly snuffing out its own fury, according to a Hickory man who drove down the mountain this morning. He said one side of the whole mountain had been left barren, and the only immediate danger rests in the possible chance that the flames will creep over the top of the mountain and reach the other side.

People in Blowing Rock heard the roaring of the great fire all last night, he said, and Blowing Rock is 18 miles from Grandfather mountain. He did not believe the danger would be as great as first reports indicated.

Long distance telephone communication with Blowing Rock this morning affirmed the report that the fire is subsiding. The manager of the Green Park Hotel said that persons who went over last night to help fight the blaze were returning this morning and the report is out that the fire is dying down. He said neither Blowing Rock nor Linville City was in any immediate danger from the blaze.
