Memorial Day Celebrated in Justice, N.C., May 23, 1919

From The Franklin Times, Friday, May 23, 1919. One of the many places in the South that was still celebrating Memorial Day on Confederate Day and ignoring the national holiday.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day was fittingly observed at Justice on Saturday, May 10th, when at the insistence of Mr. J.L. Bowden, a Confederate Veterans re-union was celebrated with the Expeditionary soldiers taking a part and the citizens of the community enjoying a most delightful day. The main speech of the occasion was delivered by Rev. Trela D. Collins, pastor of the Louisburg Baptist Church. It was interesting and inspiring and greatly enjoyed by all who heard it. Among the others making addresses were Capt. T.S. Collie and P.G. Alston, Dr. J.E. Malone and Mr. J.L. Bowden. Special music had been arranged and added much to the programme. After the speaking, the crowd went to the monument just in front of the school. (line unreadable) was the first Confederate monument erected in the County, where a circle was formed and appropriate services held during the decoration.

The order of advance to the monument was led by a number of young ladies, descendants of Confederate Veterans. Then followed the world’s war soldiers, about 30 in number.

The exercises being over, the crowd was invited to partake of a big picnic dinner, which in abundance and variety of good things to eat, cannot be described, except to those whose fortune has given them the pleasure of attending a like occasion at Justice.

All enjoyed the day and extended best wishes for the continued celebration of Memorial day at Justice.
