Should Women Drive? Editor Thinks Issue Should Be Whether Children Younger Than 16 Should Drive, July 12, 1919

From the editorial page of the Hickory Daily Record, July 12, 1919

The accident, we are told, caused much discussion as to whether women should be allowed to operate automobiles on the business streets of Winston-Salem and the aldermen are said to be considering stricter regulations. All this discussion took place after a small boy was run over by a young woman.

The Record believes that the average woman, who has a greater horror of causing injury than the average man, is as competent to drive a car as the average man, but it does believe that boys and girls under 16 years old have no business at the wheel. It believes that all owners of automobiles should be careful, as many of them are, and those who are not careful should be placed on a level with the habitual pedestrian—let them walk.
