Bennett Place Reconstructed Historic Site, 2021

The original Bennett house, which was destroyed by fire in 1921, has been reconstructed and the site is open to visitors. The photo shows a Confederate reinactment at the site. Confederate General Johnston's headquarters were in Greensboro and Union General Sherman's headquarters were in Raleigh, so they agreen to meet at the Bennett place in Durham, where they signed surrender papers for the southern armies in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. The reconstructed farm of James Bennett includes a farmhouse, kitchen and smokehouse.
