Charlie Sawyer, 13, Wins Freckle Contest, Oct. 10, 1922

Charlie Backed ‘Em All Off the Board. . . Freckle Face Kid From Providence Took the Prize in a Walkover

Charlie Sawyer, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lem Sawyer of Providence Township won first prize in The Independent’s freckle face boy contest this morning, and Cephus Sawyer, an Elizabeth City boy, got second prize.

It was a tame contest. Thirteen-year-old Charlie Sawyer road three miles to town on his bicycle and planted himself in front of The Independent building before 9 o’clock a.m. He backed everything off the board except Cephus. Boy after boy came up to get into the contest, took one look at Charlie, and beat it. Charlie has more freckles than a nest of Guinea Hen eggs and a shock of red hair to go with it.

Charlie got a ticked to the Fair and $5 in nickels and dimes. He may survive the big day ahead of him if his mother has a good supply of castor oil on hand and doses him to-night.
