Mrs. C.J. Mathews and Mrs. R.M.B. Ellington went to Richmond last night in response to a message notifying them of the death of their cousin, Ben S. Rucker, who was killed in an automobile accident. The Associated Press last evening sent out the following concerning the accident: A blurred windshield and a wet roadway were responsible for the automobile accident in which Benjamin S. Rucker, member of a local tobacco firm, was killed, and Miss Grace Barton Cuyler, prominent New York society girl, were seriously injured late last night, when the car in which they were riding overturned in a western suburb.
It was said that Rucker was blinded by a mist which had collected on the windshield and drove the machine off the pavement. When the driver attempted to steer the machine back to the roadway, it is said, the car overturned, pinning Mr. Rucker and Miss Cuyler beneath. Mr. Rucker was killed instantly. Richard S. Paulette, a local lawyer, and Miss Josephine Bucker, also of New York, were thrown clear of the car and escaped injury.
Miss Cuyler, whose back was broken, was reported in a serious condition tonight. Physicians at the hospital, however, entertain hope for her recovery.
