Richmond Pearson, 71, Former Diplomat in Poor Health, Sept. 10, 1923

Prominent Man Seriously Ill . . . Former Consul and Diplomat Very Low

By the Associated Press

Asheville, N.C., Sept. 9—Richmond Pearson is in a serious condition at his home, Richmond Hill, near here, relatives and friends having practically abandoned hope of his recovery. He is 71 years old and has been in bad health for some time.

Mr. Pearson is well known as a diplomatist, having been named as American consul to Verviers and Leige by President Grant when he was 21 years old. Under President Roosevelt he was consul to Genoa. He was also United States minister to Persia and later to Greece and Montenegro, leaving the diplomatic service in 1908.

Earlier he served in the general assembly of North Carolina and was also twice elected to Congress, having been elected by the greatest majorities ever given a Republican in this district.

Thomas Pearson, his son, is now in Teheran, Persia, a member of the commission of Americans invited by the Sharah of Persia to investigate and help adjust the finances of that country. A daughter, Miss Majorie Pearson, lives in Baltimore, Md.

From page 2 of The Durham Morning Herald, Monday, September 10, 1923. Verviers is a city of Wallonia located in the province of Leige, Belgium.
