27 Receive Diplomas at Queens College Commencement, May 19, 1925

Commencement. . . 27 Graduates Receive Diplomas. . . Address by Hon. T.F. Watkins

The graduating exercises of the college were held in the chapel at 10:30 Tuesday morning, May 19th. T. Frank Watkins, attorney, of Anderson, S.C., was the speaker, outlining the need for conservation of state and personal resources and scoring the trend toward a centralized federal government.

The past decade has witnessed an excess of spending liberality and radicalism, and there was no stint by this nation during the World War, Mr. Watkins said in beginning his address. Since the war, he continued, there has been a scramble to issue tax-exempt securities.

The trend toward the centralization of government powers at Washington was roundly assailed by Mr. Watkins, who referred to the flood of bills introduced into Congress to regulate almost everything. Wise leaders, he remarked, are a warning against this evil, and the time is ripe to turn back to the advice of Washington, Calhoun and others who feared just what is taking place today.

Dr. McGeachy with a few appropriate words conferred the diplomas and certificates to the 27 graduates.

Following the presentation of diplomas Miss McLean read the honor roll and made several announcements, and Dr. Frazer made a short talk.

To Miss Annie Parks Moore goes the honor of making the highest average in her studies for four years. Miss Wilma Garner made second highest average.

A surprise on the program was the presentation by Dr. Frazer to Miss Annie Parks Moore of a check for $1,450, the amount she had earned during her eight years’ connection with the college. It was presented to Dr. Frazer by her father, and in turn given to her. Annie Parks has been one of the leaders of the college during her student days here.

The gift of the class of ’25 to the college was a check for the college library.
