The Rev. J.D. Teachy, pastor of St. Mark’s A.M.E. Zion church near Tuscarora, N.C., is doing a good work on that circuit and is well-liked by the people.
The Rev. J.E. Robinson, our new pastor at Clinton Chapel, New Bern, N.C., is adjusting himself to the work there with bright prospects of a successful administration. His predecessor, Dr. E.F. Rollins, who achieved wonderfully there, has gone to St. Augustine, Kinston, N.C., where he will doubtless meet with his customary success. The old reliable and evangelical S.R. Walker has gone to Philadelphia where he will be heard from in no uncertain way.
Rev. A. Hill has his work well in hand at James City, Rev. W.L. Lawhorn is struggling bravely at Morehead City, while Rev. F.G. White is singing and preaching his way into the hearts of the people at Bayboro, and Rev. A. King is hustling as usual.
Brother Frank Martin, Route 5, Box 155, Huntsville, Ala., writes to ask us to help locate his father, the Rev. H.F. Martin. The last time Brother Martin heard of his father he was at Mulberry, S.C. It is not stated how long that has been. If any one knows of the whereabouts of Rev. Martin, they will please communicate with his son.
We acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to attend the marriage of Miss Alice Oleza, accomplished daughter of Prof. and Mrs. J.R. Wingfield, Mt. Meigs, Alabama, to Mr. James W. Smothers, Wednesday evening, August 5th in the auditorium of Roger’s Building, State Reform School. The happy couple will be at home, Chapel Hill, Tex., after August 10th.
The following telegram has been received:
Statesville, N.C., July 20, 1925
Dr. Davenport:
Charlotte, N.C. Just closed a great revival. Mother Baggett swept Statesville with her gospel sermons; large number of accessions, finance good. Keep inspiring us with your editorials. --H.E. Wilson
July 18 was a memorable date in the life of Dr. E. George Biddle, our valued correspondent and one of the ablest ministers of the race. Sixty-two years ago of date of July 18th Elder Biddle was wounded at the battle of Fort Wagner, where Col. R.G. Shaw of the 54th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, was killed, and as the Rebels said, “buried among his niggers.” Elder Biddle has been blessed with a long and useful life and as he nears his 80th year he may look back with joy and satisfaction upon a long and honorable career.
Our good friend the Rev. B.C. Roberson, formerly pastor of Evan’s Chapel, Fayetteville, N.C., writes: “A daughter, Marion Elizabeth, was given us June 18th, in answer to prayer. Prayer changes things.” We congratulate Bro. Roberson.
In the first 12 months of the pastorage of the Rev. P.K. Fonvielle at Hopkins Chapel, Asheville, N.C., 80 members have been received into the church and the indebtedness has been reduced from $3,000 to $1,200. In addition to this, an additional budget of $300 per month has been taken care of and a fine congregation waits upon the ministry of Dr. Fonvielle.
The Sunday School and Varick Christian Endeavor of the Salisbury and Winston-Salem District Convention held at Mocksville, N.C., July 15th was largely attended and evoked considerable enthusiasm among the Sunday School and Varick Christian Endeavor workers. The Rev. H.B. Moss, D.D., has his work well in hand and is the popular Presiding Elder of the District. Prof. J.H. Alexander, A.B., is the District Superintendent of the Sunday School Convention and seems to understand his business. A large number of young people, especially young men, participating in the deliberations of the convention was a feature.
Rev. H.W. Ellison, Sardis, Ga., informs us of the death of Brother John Brigham who passed away on the 18th of July. Brother Brigham was one of the oldest and honored trustees of Sith Chapel, A.M.E. Zion church, and was loyal to every interest of the Denomination. A man of such usefulness will be greatly missed.
