Union Mills, Aug. 17—Today Round Hill Academy opened her doors again to the numerous students of the community who believe in and patronize religious education. Though the number has not swelled above the past mark, there is promise of a greater spirit in the school this year than has ever been before.
Mr. J.F. Alexander, well known manufacturer and banker of Forest city, has taken over Round Hill Academy and will pay off the $16,000 indebtedness and will equip, enlarge and run the school in cooperation with the Baptist State Mission Board. Mr. Alexander assumes all obligations and contracts. He will enlarge and endow the institution so its good work will go on many years after he is gone. It will be maintained as it is now, a Standard High School, with an industrial department and a home for motherless children. Its name will likely be changed to the “Alexander Industrial School.” A chance to work their way through the school will be given to from 50 to 100 boys and girls each year.
The churches will have nothing more to do with it. They will not be asked to contribute one cent to the school. The Home Mission Board will help to maintain it, as they have been doing.
The executive committee met Aug. 10 with Mr. Alexander and went over the matter. The committee recommended the project to the Board of Trustees who met Friday and accepted Mr. Alexander’s plan. It will be a Baptist school but the Baptist churches will not be asked to contribute to it.
This term, which opened today, will go on as usual. An up-to-date water and light system will be installed soon. The school will be greatly enlarged and improved. The Farmers Hardware company of Forest City is doing the plumbing work on the water system now.
This move on the part of Mr. Alexander means much for the county, and he is to be highly commended for his philanthropic work.
