N.C.'s Shipping Out this Year's Strawberry Crop, May 4, 1926

Strawberry Shipments Show Rapid Gains. . . 50 Cars Moved Saturday and Sunday and 117 on Monday

Raleigh, May 5—Strawberry shipments from North Carolina are showing rapid gains, according to reports issued by the state department of agriculture Tuesday, which showed that 51 cars of berries moved Saturday and Sunday, and 117 cars on Monday. The reports were received in Raleigh by leased wire and showed in addition to the figures given above, that an additional carload was shipped by express Monday.

More strawberries are now being shipped out of North Carolina than from any other shipping state. Berries from California and Louisiana are all having to shipped by express on account of the competition from the Old North State berries.

The total carlot shipments for the entire United States to date, as of May 3rd aggregated 2,209 as compared with 4,386 on the corresponding date last year, showing a decrease of 2,177 carloads.

North Carolina berries are selling on the eastern markets at a range of from 23 cents to 31 cents a quart, although a few choice shipments are selling in New York for 32 cents.
