Several cartons of cigarettes, a number of plugs of tobacco, boxes of chewing gum and large pieces of bacon and ham were taken by thieves from the office of the Newport Shipbuilding company Friday evening, according to a report made yesterday to the police department. Detective D.W. Coleman was assigned to the case but no arrests had been made last night. Mr. Coleman stated that the thief or thieves had entered the building by cutting a screen and raising a window. The storage room was not entered.
One of the two cash registers in the room was broken open by the culprits but it happened that this one was empty. The other cash register, untouched, contained about $45 in cash, it was said.
