Gastonia, N.C., April 7—The jury trying Robert Grice and John Carswell, charged with killing John Ford, was discharged here late today after it reported it could not agree on a verdict and the men were remanded to jail in default of $5,000 bail each pending another trial. The next regular term of the criminal court will be held in two weeks but it was not known tonight if the men would be called to trial then.
The jury trying the two men had been out 20 hours after having heard testimony to the effect that the shooting took place on a lonely road near here when Grice and Carswell came upon Ford and Ransom Killian and two young women, one of them the daughter of one of the defendants. Other criminal charges were made against the defendants by one of the young women.
