West End, July 21—The West End peach section is soon to lose one of its choicest “variety of peaches.” Martin Jones Davis, superintendent of the Williamston schools, threatens to transplant this “variety” to Martin county in the fall. This information came to a group of admirers of the “peach” who were brought together at a mystery reception given by Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Oglesby on Thursday evening. While the unsuspecting company was making merry little Betsey Oglesby, an airy messenger from Cupid, presented a telegram to the hostess, which was addressed to her guests:
“At last Dan Cupid has hit the mark, Ethelyn will wed Mr. Davis when autumn comes.”
In this informal way Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Von Canon announced the engagement of their daughter, Ethelyn Louise, to Martin Jones Davis of Warrenton.
Mrs. Oglesby is a sister to Mr. Von Canon. The bride-to-be is a 1920 graduate of Greensboro College. During the winter she has been teaching while her summers are spent here.
From the front page of The Moore County News, Carthage, N.C., July 26, 1923. The headline said Miss Von Cannon would wed Mr. Jones but the story calls him Mr. Davis.
