E.M. Harrington Brings Coal Dug in Moore County to Town, Oct. 18, 1923

Harrington Brings Moore County Coal. . . Leaves Specimens at News Office Taken from Pit Dug During Civil War, Near Haw Branch Station on N. & S. Ry.

Just to prove that Moore County has as good coal as any place this side of the Pennsylvania coal fields, Mr. E.M. Harrington brought down a sack of coal from the Coal Fields of Moore Monday evening leaving several nuggets in the window of the News office and carrying some more up the bank where they may be seen at either place any time.

He got the coal at a hole in the ground near Haw Branch station where Messrs. Lane and Harden are cleaning out an old shaft opened during the Civil War. Mr. Harrington says the coal he brought to town came from within four feet of the top of the ground.

All over that section one may see what seems to the inexperienced eye to be the outcroppings of pure coal, and residents of that section are helpful that before the wjnter is over to have found several paying mines.
