A story of a family of 10, the mother of which is seriously ill with typhoid fever, getting its water supply from the pasture pond where the horses and cattle drink and wade, is told by health department officials who investigated the condition Saturday.
The family lives on a farm which is located in three counties, Durham, Wake and Chatham. Some of the eight children are nearly grown. On the place are seven cows and several horses, besides other animals.
Some time ago the well went dry, so the pond of water in the pasture, which is caused by damming a dry ditch when it rains, was utilized for the family water supply. The water does not flow nor has an outlet so it soon becomes stagnant. Horses and cows go there to drink. The family now share in its supply.
Worse still, it is stated, the father refuses to permit himself or his children to be given the typhoid preventative treatment.
The miracle is that the entire family has not yet contracted typhoid, health officials say.
