Durham Recorder's Court Breaks Record for Clearing Cases, Oct. 23, 1923

Tried 48 Within 70 Minutes. . . Recorder’s Court Broke Record Yesterday for Speed in Trying Cases . . . Many Gamblers Up. . . Englishwoman Charged with Beating Hotel Bill

To try 48 defendants is the accomplishment of recorder’s court yesterday. For speed in transacting the usual busy Monday morning’s court work the record made yesterday has not been equaled in the annals of the city.

More than half of the men in court were under charges of gambling. These were speedily tried and given fines of $5 and $10 and the costs, varying with the nature of the cases.

Juanita Bain, Englishwoman, who was arrested last Saturday upon a charge of defrauding a hotel, was released from custody when a non suit was entered in her case. The woman became stranded in the city after the carnival that was at the county fair left the city.

Nine drunks were tried and found guilty, receiving fines ranging from $5 and the costs to $25 and the costs. Those tried under this charge were: Sam Bostick, frank Hester (called and failed), Shipe Roberts, Tom Epps, Love Haskins and William Umbush.

Those charged with gambling were: Benny Freeman, Joe Hayes, Foster Thompson, John Royster, Reuben McLlain, J.A. Johnson, Laurence Page, William Rogers, Sidney Lee, Charlie Herndon, Otis Fuller, Ed Jenkins, James Blount, Joe Smallwood, John Willis, Jim Bowling, Milton Walton, Jake McDougald, Jennie Stone, Tom Williams, Reney Atwater, Henry Trice, Robert Fleming, and Dave Harris.

Nellie Holladay, charged with larceny, was given a 30-day sentence in jail to served at the county workhouse.

Polly King, charged with larceny, will not be tried until October 24.

Math Hedgepeth, charged with boisterous cursing, was fined $5 and the costs.

William Bailey was given a suspended sentence upon a charge of vagrancy, but was fined $1 and the costs for assault and battery.

Allen Washington was fined $5 and the costs for boisterous cursing.

John Hines was fined $1 and the costs for taking part in an affray.
