Fire Department Saves Business Section When Fighting Blaze at Central Hotel, Oct. 2, 1923

Bad Fire Averted by Firemen at Elkin

Elkin, October 2—Swift and heroic work of the local fire department narrowly saved the business section of the central part of town being consumed by fire last night when the Central Hotel, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Reeves, caught fire about 11:30 o’clock, making considerable headway before having been discovered.

The origin of the fire is not positively known but it is possible that it was caused by a defect in the electrical wiring. A servant occupying a small room in the rear of the building was awakened by the volume of smoke in her room and it was with difficulty that she escaped from the room and gave the alarm.

The hotel building suffered severe damage both from fire and water, the exact amount not yet estimated. The dry goods stock of L. Pierce and Co., on the lower floor of the building, was heavily damaged by water.
