William Fairchild, 77, Celebrates Birthday with Car Accident, Oct. 3, 1923

Thrilling Experience on Mountain Side—William Fairchild

Mooresville Enterprise: On last Thursday Mr. William Fairchild of Wilkes county celebrated his 77th birthday. Mr. Jesse F. Fairchild, a brother of this city, with his son, Mr. R.A. Fairchild and family, and Mr. John Fairchild, started out in Mr. R.A. Fairchild’s car.

The trip was with out events until they reached a point beyond the Brush mountains, where there are numerous peaks to climb. They had ascended practically all of the most difficult until within a short distance of their destination, when getting almost to the top of the grade, Mr. Fairchild attempted to shift the gears when the machine started backward down the hill. The brakes refused to work and the entire party rolled backward for about 50 yards. Mr. Fairchild cut the car into the bank, but for some reason it went to the opposite side of the road intended and turned over. Old Mr. Fairchild was caught just he stepped from the car. The weight of the machine rested upon his shoulders until the others all reached safety. The party then took hold of the car and set it to rights, after which the journey was completed and a grand day was spent at the birthday anniversary. No one received any serious injuries. Old Mr. Fairchild’s leg and shoulders were rather sore for a day or so, and Mrs. J.F. Fairchild escaped with a slight bruise on one arm. News reached here that a terrible accident had occurred, but it turned out quite differently. The party reached home early Thursday night, all safe.
