Police Looking for Charles Kendell in Killing of Dr. Powell, May 20, 1924

Physician Killed and Slayer Flies. . . Quarrel in Virginia Town Followed by Death; Authorities Call on Police at Many Points to Catch Fugitive

Gordonsville, Va., May 19—Dr. Powell, brother of S.P. Powell, Commonwealth’s Attorney of Spotsylvania County, it is alleged, was shot and skilled yesterday afternoon by Charles Kendell. Five bullets from a pistol in the hands of Kendell ended the life of the doctor, according to reports reaching here. the shooting occurred about 14 miles from Mineral City.

Details of the events leading up to the shooting are meager. It is understood that the doctor and Kendell had an argument several days ago. Kendell is said to have gone to a store and called the physician out. The two men went down a road, a short distance. Later five shots were heard.

After the shooting, Kendell is said to have returned to his home, changed his clothes and fled. It was said that the man was seen in Mineral City about 7 p.m. last night.

Soon after the shooting Commonwealth’s Attorney Powell notified the Chesapeake and Ohio train dispatcher of Richmond to have the police there be on the lookout for Kendell. Kendell is described as being of medium height, red-faced, with a fresh scar on the left side of his face, blue eyes, brown, hair, weight 140 pounds. The attorney was unable to describe the clothing Kendell is wearing, due to the change he made when he returned home.
