After Hundreds of People Rescue Merchandise from Fallston Fire, Thieves Take $35,000 of It, July 17, 1925

Merchandise Stolen at Big Fallston Fire

A quantity of merchandise which had been rescued from the big $75,000 fire at Fallston Monday night, July 6th, was stolen from the place of safety to which the rescue party had taken it. Hundreds of people were at work saving what they could from the stores and warehouses, but it is known that a quantity of merchandise which had been removed to a place of safety from the flames was carried away. Most of the stolen merchandise consisted of bags of sugar.

Mr. Tom Stamey, who was in Shelby this week, says the loss by the Stamey company was approximately $35,000. Gantt, Lutz, Lackey and others lost heavily, and their loss probably means more to them than the loss to Stamey company. Mr. Stamey says his company has rented a warehouse from Claude Falls, where the furniture and undertaking departments will be continued. The Stamey company plans to let the contract at an early date for a large brick store building to take the place of the wooden building in which the Stameys have been conducting business for a quarter of a century or longer.
