Death Ends Career of Poplar Branch Merchant

Currituck County lost an outstanding citizen in the death of D.W. Woodhouse, who died at his home in Poplar Branch last week at the age of 62. For nearly ? years he had been in the mercantile business in that community and most of that time was postmaster. His influence was felt in the political life of the county, and he had served on various school boards, held the office of local magistrate, and in many ways made himself probably the most widely known citizen of his time in the community.

Over a thousand people from every walk of life in the county flocked to the funeral of Mr. Woodhouse, when he was laid to rest with Oddfellows and Masonic honors. Rev. E.W. Hurst Jr., Poplar Branch Baptist pastor assisted in the services.

Nephews of Mr. Woodhouse served as pallbearers. They were William Poyner and Winton Poyner of Poplar Branch; J. Edmund Woodhouse, Clinton Woodhouse and Earl M. Woodhouse of Virginia Beach, and Johnnie F. Woodhouse of Princess Anne County, Virginia.

Mr. Woodhouse is survived by his wife, who was Miss Sarah Jane Dunton, and a son, Wilbur D. Woodhouse; two brothers, Capt. J.E. Woodhouse of Virginia Beach and Lucian Woodhouse of Sigma, Va., a half brother, J.M. Woodhouse of Norfolk; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Poyner and Mrs. J.W. Poyner of Poplar Branch.
