Hickory, Aug. 4—Solicitor R.L. Huffman will ask the death penalty for Major Wade V. Bowman, commander of the cavalry unit of the North Carolina National Guard, who was bound over to the superior court on a charge of committing a serious statutory offense against a 12-year-old girl. Bowman was released on bond of $7,500.

Solicitor Huffman was here during the trial and heard the evidence. Immediately at its conclusion he said that he would “ask the jury to return a verdict of guilty of the capital offense.” The case will come up at the November term of court. Adjutant General Silent

The Solicitor will make an effort to reverse the action of the lower court here Friday by asking the grand jury at the November term of Catawba superior court to return a true bill against Major Bowman charging a statutory offense. He will ask the death penalty for Bowman he said.

In the meantime Bowman is under bond of $7,500, following the trial in recorder’s court, when probable cause was found of assault with intent to commit a felony.

Bowman pleaded guilty to the charge of assault on a female, and prayer for judgment was continued until August 20.

The solicitor, however, is insistent that the case be tried as a major crime, in stead of on the lesser charge. The recorder’s trial was referred to by Mr. Huffman as “a private trial,” held in the law office of the recorder.
