Town and Country News. . . Local Items of Interest

Summer school will close this week.

The protracted meeting at the Baptist church in Wilkesboro closed Sunday night. With the price of gasoline 27 cents, the price for sawing wood is 80 cents a cord, stovewood.

Mrs. Darcus Phillips of Winston-Salem spent a few days last week at Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Welborn’s in Wilkesboro.

Mrs. James Rivers delightfully entertained the Wilkesboro Book Club last Friday afternoon. Delicious refreshments were served.

The annual catalogue of the Appalachian State Normal school, Boone, gives the attendance from Wilkes at 68. This school trains public school teachers.

Mr. J.J. Hendren was in Wilkesboro Sunday to Tuesday attending the county road commission’s monthly meeting of which he is a member.

The first part of August is the time many people sow turnips. With exceeding dry weather the turnip seed—unless in some damp low land or swamp—are not likely to come up or live and grow on the dry soil after sprouting.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph L. Phillips and family of Americus, Ga., returned home Friday after spending several weeks with his sister, Mrs. T.J. Frazier and other members of the family. They were accompanied home by his niece, Miss Pauline Phillips, who will spend some time with relatives and friends in south Georgia.

Hay-making is now on in Watauga and doubtless the yield will be the lightest ever harvested in the county. The best bottom meadows may make one-half the crop but many farmers are cutting on fourth to one-third of former yields. The cabbage and potato crops are also damaged by the protracted drought, which still remains unbroken. –Watauga Democrat, July 30th.

Wilkes Superior court begins August 10th. The Hustler was in error last week when publishing that court was to start this week. August 1st was first Monday for meeting of the various county boards but not the convening of August court. We regret very much if any one of our subscribers were inconvenienced or inconvenienced themselves by the mistake. August court last year was set for beginning August 4th, but this year it is August 10th.
