Slot Machines Being Removed from Clinton Establishments, March 18, 1926

Orders Slot Machines Out. . . Grand Jury Recommendation Being Obeyed by Merchants of Clinton

Following the request made by the grand jury during the February term of court the citizens of the town are having the slot machines removed from all business establishments that are carrying them.

According to Mr. J.B. Williams, clerk of court, Deputy Honeycutt notified the business establishments that were carrying these slot machines last week that if they did not discontinue the operation of them, he would immediately prosecute them. It is understood that the merchants of the town who are operating these machines have town license to operation, but they discontinue their use following the demand of Officer Honeycutt.

Mr. Williams further stated that it was the intention of the citizens of Clinton to have their use discontinued throughout Sampson county and that this act would be carried out just as soon as the officers could call on the business houses and rural stores which are carrying them at present. According to the officer, these machines have been operated in an illegal manner since they were installed in the various business establishments of the town.
