Mrs. Tolbert Follows Husband to Philadelphia, Shoots at Him and Mrs. Jerrell, Nov. 5, 1926

Shot Shatters a Love Triangle. . . Tar Heels Jailed in Philadelphia—Mrs. Tolbert Shoots Husband

Philadelphia, Nov. 5—An alleged North Carolina love triangle was precipitated into local police court by a pistol shot at the Broad Street station of the Pennsylvania railroad this morning.

Mrs. Bettie Tolbert, 23, alleged to be the mother of three children in Leaksville, N.C., was said by police to have fired the shot in an attempt to injur Mrs. Laura Jerrell, 28, of Greensboro, whom she found accompanying her husband, William Tolbert, 23.

The irate wife, it was said, had overtaken the couple in an automobile and had taken the pistol from her husband’s car. The bullet narrowly missed Mrs. Jerrell.

All three were arrested and taken to a police station where a police matron found the pistol concealed beneath Mrs. Tolbert’s corset.

Mrs. Tolbert charged that her husband was wanted in Leaksville for non-support, and that Mrs. Jerrell was wanted for deserting her family in North Carolina.

Tolbert, who has been living here, denied the charge. He said that he had accidentally met Mrs. Jerrell on her way to the station.
