Our Soldiers

Mr. Earl Staton returned to Camp Jackson this morning.

Lieutenant William McDowell and wife arrived on the morning train from Washington, D.C.

Mr. Macon Hoggard of the remount depot Belair is home on a short furlough.

Mr. Earl Staton has been home on a few days furlough and goes back to camp for special work. He does not know when he will be discharged.

Local Doings

Miss Louise Vanlandingham arrived this morning from Greenville returning from school.

Rev. and Mrs. M.Y. Self returned last night from Sunbury where they had spent the holidays.

Mr. David G. Gaskins left this morning for Norfolk, Va., after visiting here.

Mrs. Fannie Carlyles left this morning for Whitakers, returning home.

Miss Mildred Wright left this morning for Franklin, Va., to visit her sister, Mrs. Williams.

Mr. Thurston Flanagan left on the morning train for Norfolk, Va., on business.

Miss Nellie Dickens is spending a few days in Martin county.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Harrell left this morning for Halifax.

Mr. Joe H. Allsbrook left this morning for Halifax on business.

Mr. W.W. Pittman of Ahoskie is visiting here with friends.

Mr. Kelley White left this morning for Norfolk, returning home.

Mrs. R.H. Pittman and children of Rocky Mount spent the holidays with Mrs. Pittman’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.G. Dickens.

Mr. George Moore and family of Martin County motored here Sunday to spend the day with Mr. and Mrs. N.G. Dickens.

Mr. Jeff Ausbon of Robersonville, accompanied by his wife and children, motored to Mr. and Mrs. N.G. Dickens’ Sunday.

Among those that motored over to Tarboro last night to see the “13th” chair were Messrs. R.J., Albion, Raymond, and Dennis Madry, Sherwood and Roy Allsbrook, Aubrey Shackell, Cary Knight, Richard Moore, and Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Shackell.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dickens, who have been spending the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. N.G. Dickens, returned to their home in Rocky Mount.

Weddings

Dickens-Savage

A very quiet wedding took place on Christmas morning the contracting parties being Mr. Edward Dickens of Rocky Mount, but formerly of Scotland Neck, and Miss Amanda Savage of Goldsboro. Only the near relatives and a few friends were present.

Burnette-Moore

A pretty though quiet wedding took place last night at 6 o’clock in the Methodist parsonage, the contracting parties being Mr. Emmett Lawrence Burnette of Palmyra and Miss Eva Lillian Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.K. Moore.

Only a few close friends and the relatives of the contracting parties were present at the ceremony that was conducted by Rev. M.Y. Self, pastor of the Methodist church.

Immediately after the ceremony the bridal couple left by car for Hobgood to connect with the southbound train to Florida where the honeymoon will be spent. Mr. and Mrs. Burnette expect to be back in about 10 days.

Mr. Burnette has been for the past seven years a valued employee of Baker Newell and Company of Palmyra and is well known in this section, where he has a host of friends. He is brother to Mrs. Vance Savage of this section, and also Mr. A.T. Burnette of Oak City.

Miss Eva Moore is a very popular girl in Scotland Neck and her friends are innumerable. She has been for several years a member of the graded school faculty.

Upon returning Mr. and Mrs. Burnette will make their home in Scotland Neck as Mr. Burnette will be connected in farming with Mr. G.K. Moore for the coming year.
