News from Southwest Alamance County Topped With Reports of Flu, Jan. 23, 1919

From The Alamance Gleaner, Graham, N.C., Jan. 23, 1919

Epidemic of Flu in Southwest Alamance

We are having some spring-like weather, though people are staying indoors very closely and trying to avoid all crowds and gatherings of all kinds. There is quite an epidemic of flu near us, and our community is doing all in their power to keep it out. Kimesville cotton mills have been standing for several days, the disease being in nearly every family, but in a mild form. Up to this time no deaths have been reported in the place.

Several farmers in our community contemplate building new homes in the near future.

Mrs. Eliza Bowman died of paralysis at her home near Kimesville and was buried at Mt. Pleasant on the 19th. She leaves a husband, one daughter and several sons.

The Oakdale school has not opened yet; no time has been set for the opening. Flu has greatly hindered the schools in some localities.
