Legislature Considering Adjournment on Account of Influenza and Sick Members Until April or First of May. . . Lt. Governor Gardner Is Opposed to Postponement

By W.T. Bost

Raleigh, N.C., Jan. 13—With Speaker Brummitt in bed sick and Representative Taylor of Hyde in bed with the “Flu” and Representative High in bed with a high temperature, preconvention hours were spent in considering adjournment until either April of the first of May.

Speaker Brummitt later in the day sent word that he would open the House at 2 o’clock, but in the meantime the delegates feel that it is best to close on account of the prevalence of influenza and a number of have gone home.

Lt. Governor Gardner is dead against adjournment. He does not know whether to ??. But there is so much agitation in the Lower House for recess that a continued session looks gloomy today.

In the Senate today Gray of Forsyth county introduced a resolution to introduce into the state the Virginia budget system of accounting.

The Upper House awaited action in the Lower House until 2 o’clock during which time Governor Garner appointed Gray at the head of the finance committee and Holderness of Edgecombe at the head of the Appropriations committee, the same as two years ago. He placed Scales at the head of the Judiciary No. 1 and Long of Halifax No. 2 Harding of Pitt takes the position of Chairman of the Committee on Education.

In the House, Speaker Brummitt appointed Daughton of Allegany Chairman of Finance, M.C. Cain of Vance on the Appropriations committee and Bryant of Durham on the Committee of Education.

Harry Stubbs who feels exceedingly “Fluish” will dress Bryant down on Tuesday and then go home.
