99-Year-Old Man Jailed for Criticizing President, Moved to Hospital, Jan. 11, 1919

From the Hickory Daily Record, Jan. 11, 1919

99-Year-Old Tennessean In Jail?

Asheville, Jan. 11—Broken and feebly showing every day of his 99 years, Thomas Owenby, a Tennesseean charged with violation of the espionage law, was removed from the county jail to a local hospital and will appear at the next term of superior court for trial. Owenby is charged with uttering criticisms of President Wilson while the nation was at war, the criticisms not coinciding with the views of his audience, who had him arrested on the charge of violating the espionage laws. He was placed in jail here and has remained until Commissioner Stradley found him there yesterday. A physician was called and examined Owenby, and after securing the consent of Marshal Webb, the old man was removed to a hospital.
