Capt. Thomas Jones, 80 years of age, died at the Exchange Hotel, the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.F. Smith, early last Saturday morning after a brief illness. His health had been on the decline for some time, but he was cheerful until the last.
Capt. Jones was born in Tally Ho and lived in Granville County practically all his life, excepting the few years he spent in Eastern North Carolina. He was a brave and fearless soldier and followed Lee throughout the War Between the States. He served 4 years in the 8th Kentucky regiment, was captured and taken to Point Lookout where he stayed 18 months. He was wounded twice in the right arm, then transferred to the 46th N.C. regiment. He was a Mason of high degree, being a charter member of the Oxford Lodge at the time of his death. He was kind and generous, and never spoke ill of anyone.
Capt. Jones was a member of the Oxford Methodist Church, from whence the funeral services were held last Sunday evening, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E.M. Snipes. The body was in charge of the Masonic fraternity. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, at the side of his wife who preceded him to the grave several months ago.
The following children survive: Mrs. L.F. Smith, Mrs. W.H. Walters, Oxford; Mr. E.T. Jones, Oxford Route 3; Mrs. E.H. Hefler and O.E. Jones, Mt. Olive; Mrs. D.T. Lunsford, Durham; J.E. Jones and Mrs. W.D. Renn, La Grange; Mrs. Dorah Harris, Goldsboro. One sister, Mrs. Nannie Green at Stem, and numerous grandchildren survive.

Mrs. Delha Harris Goes to Her Reward. . . Laid to Rest in Elmwood Cemetery
After a lingering illness, Mrs. Delha Harris died last Friday afternoon at Brantwood Hospital where she was taking medical treatment. She was a Christian lady of strong faith and personality, and was greatly esteemed for her noble virtues.
The funeral was held from the Oxford Methodist Church last Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.M. Snipes, the beloved pastor of the deceased, assisted by Rev. B.H. Black. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Harris is survived by the following children: Mrs. Oscar Breedlove, Messrs. Grady, Waverly and Edmund Harris, of Oxford, and Mrs. Fizer of Hamlet, and one brother, Dr. E.T. White of Oxford.
