Deaths of Mrs. W.J. Maynor, Capt. Norman Shaw, Bruce Roberts, Mrs. J.N. Gammon, July 8, 1923

Mrs. W.J. Maynor Died at Hospital. . . Respected Woman Will be Buried Early Sunday in Warren County

Mrs. W.J. Maynor, for many years a highly respected resident of Durham, died Saturday afternoon at 5:30 o’clock at Watts hospital of a complication of diseases followed by a serious operation performed Friday. Mrs. Maynor was a devout member of the First Baptist church for many years before feeble health forced her to give up church activity. She was regarded as having a high Christian character and was loved and respected by all who knew her. Her home was at 327 Pope street. Funeral services will be held Sunday morning at 7:30 o’clock at the Stallings burying grounds, in Warren county, and conducted by Rev. E.A. Stainstreet of the First Baptist church. The funeral procession will go to Warren county through the country.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Maynor is survived by several step-children, a sister, Mrs. T.W. Odham, and a niece, Miss Arline Stallings. Pall bearers will be selected from her step-children and nephews.

Prominent Citizen Dies in Charlotte

Charlotte, N.C., July 7—Captain Norman L. Shaw, 81, one of Charlotte’s oldest citizens and long prominent in Baptist church work, died here today after an illness of several months. He came here three years ago from Drake’s Branch, Va.

Captain Shaw left the University of North Carolina in 1862 to enter the Confederate army and was one of the several survivors who were called back to Chapel Hill some years ago and awarded their degree at the hands of Woodrow Wilson, who was then governor of New Jersey. He was born in Murphreesboro, N.C.

Funeral services will be conducted here tomorrow.

Roberts Boy Was Buried Saturday

Funeral services over the remains of Bruce Roberts, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Roberts, were conducted Saturday afternoon from the home on Roxboro street at 3 o’clock. Rev. D.L. Earnhardt officiated. Interment was at Duke’s chapel.

The little fellow succumbed to colitis, dying Friday morning at 4:30 o’clock.

Former Durhamite Buried Saturday

The body of Mrs. J.N. Gammon of Richmond, Va., arrived in Durham Saturday afternoon on the 4:50 Seaboard train where they were met by a number of friends of the family. Immediately upon the arrival of the remains, they were carried to Maplewood cemetery where interment was made.

Mrs. Gammon died at her home Friday afternoon following a stroke of paralysis. She was a former resident of this city.
