Elizabeth City Beats Edenton in 4th of July Baseball Game, July 6, 1923

Elizabeth City Victorious Over Edenton July 4. . . Winner of a Score of 2 to 0 in Game Witnessed by 2,500 Fans

More than 2,500 baseball fans, it is estimated, the largest crowd to witness a baseball game in Elizabeth City since the days of the Tidewater League, if then, witnessed the game on the local diamond July 4, when Elizabeth City defeated Edenton by a score of 2 to 0.

The game was hard fought thruout. Elizabeth City scored on in the first inning and one in the fourth. No scores were made after that. The local team was fortunate in having Ballentine to pitch for it, and Abbott at second base, did good work. Both these boys are from Norfolk.

Esleeck, Edenton’s pitcher, did excellent work, and helped the team very much in making it a hard fought victory for Elizabeth City.

Elizabeth City when to Edenton yesterday to play a return game on the Edenton diamond. Edenton is expected here again next Wednesday, and Elizabeth City will play in Edenton next Thursday. Games between Elizabeth City and a team from Norfolk or Portsmouth are expected to take place on Monday and Friday of next week.

The Elizabeth City team is one of the strongest here in many years, and it is the purpose of the management to keep the team together permanently. John L. Wells is manager of the team, and among other especially active supporters are D. Guy Brockett and Thos. T. Nelson.
