John Sykes In Montana Jail Will Be Returned to N.C. to Face Embezzlement Charge, July 6, 1923

Expect Sykes’ Return in Week or 10 Days

John D. Sykes Jr., former teller in the First & Citizens National Bank of this city, who absconded with more than $25,000 of the bank’s funds last September and who was arrested in Great Falls, Mont. last week, will not fight extradition. He waved a preliminary examination before a United States Commissioner in Montana.

Young Sykes is now incarcerated in Helena, Mont., but it is believed that he will be removed to North Carolina within the next week or 10 days.

There is some talk of his case being tried in the United States Court in Raleigh, but it is more likely that he will be tried right here in the United States Court at Elizabeth City in October. A Federal Judge may order a case tried in any court in his district, no matter what place in the district the case originates.
