Derelict Cars, Tinkering Students on UNC Campus, Oct. 10, 1923

Campus Is Full of Derelict Cars

The Campus, and especially the grounds adjacent to the Quadrangle, seems to have become the experimenting grounds for future mechanics or the dumping grounds for derelict cars. There are at least a half-dozen of these boats on which the owners tinker day and night with wrench and screw driver. Sometimes these cars can be made to run, for the boys in the dormitories are liberal and are quite ready to put their shoulders to the wheel and push until the pestiferous thing fires. Most of these “racers” are stripped down to the least essentials, even to the point of nudity sometimes. Indeed, it appears that part of the essentials have been removed from some of them, for the greatest trouble found about these vehicles is that they are so hard to coax into starting. But the ardor and enthusiasm which the owners manifest in their labors on these modern agencies of travel elicit profound admiration from the students who are so fortunate as not to own one themselves; and applause is frequently heard when the proud possessor’s motor responds and he sails forth upon the highway for a joyful jaunt.
