Body of Gen. Carr Arrives in Durham. . . The City of Durham Will be Draped in Mourning Today in Respect to its Late Respected Citizen and Beloved Dead

Durham, May 3—Twilight had tucked her gray mantel over the city when the body of the late General Julian S. Carr arrived home this evening. With tender hands the casket was lifted from the hearse and carried into the home, where it will lay in state awaiting the final rite Sunday, then to be laid to rest in the family plot in Maplewood cemetery.

Around the bier are many beautiful floral offerings, many coming from far distant cities, while many were from friends in Durham. Friday afternoon a large delegation of friends went to Raleigh to meet the train which brought home the body which they accompanied back to Durham. Durham friends by the thousand of the late Gen. Carr awaited for the train and the trip through Durham was made between rows of friends with barred heads and bowed in sorrow.

Between 20 and 30 veterans from the old soldiers home in Raleigh were gathered at the station to do honor to the memory of her late friend. Sunday they will paly another part, that of ringing down for the last time on the life of their friend when they will form an escort of honor.

Tonight the body lay in the northwest room of his home. “Somerset Villa” and the family were left alone with their dead. Tomorrow the home will be thrown open to the public in order that the thousands may look for the last time on their beloved dead.

The city will be draped in mourning in respect to its late respected, and leading citizen.
