Raleigh, July 11—Wake County grand jury today returned a true bill against E.M. Smith, supervisor of the county convict camp, indicting him for the unlawful escape of Sport Weaver, de luxe bootlegger who escaped a few days ago after a very brief service of a long term. Smith had not been arrested late this afternoon.
It is charged that Weaver’s escape was aided by some friend who had an automobile near when Weaver got out and that he had been given unusual privileges.
Judge Horton, in his charge to the grand jury Monday, referred to the frequency of prison escapes.
