Asheville, July 21—F.L. Averill of Raleigh, a traveling salesman, was sentenced to 30 days on the chain gang and fined $50 in police court when convicted of driving a car while intoxicated. Averill gave notice of an appeal.
This is the first person of prominence tried for driving while intoxicated since Judge Cameron McRae announced that drunken drivers hereafter will be given chain gang terms in his court.
