A hold-up that would rival those of Jesse James happened near Turner’s Bridge on the highway between here and Four Oaks yesterday just one hour after high noon, when Mr. J.W. Langdon of Elevation township was robbed of $290.50 besides some small change. Mr. Langdon went to Four Oaks yesterday morning, attended to some business, a part of which was the collection of some money which was owed him and left Four Oaks about 12 o’clock to go to Smithfield to settle some bills. He was by himself in a horse and buggy. Just before getting to Turner’s Bridge two men came up in the road from the woods one of whom placed a gun on him while the other grabbed the reins and turned the horse into an old field. He was told if he opened his mouth, they would shoot him dead. They proceeded to cut his pockets open with a pocket knife, and took the money which he had in two purses. They heard a car on the bridge and hurried to the road. The car, which was a Chevrolet sedan, slowed down and they got in and went on their way.
Mr. Langdon said the men, who were well dressed, were muffled up on account of the cold. They were entire strangers to him. One was a tall fellow, weighing about 170 or 180 pounds and had a scar on his right hand. They were clean-shaved. Mr. Langdon said that no one passed during the encounter.
When he had gotten about 150 yards this side of the bridge, he met a car and signaled it to stop, but they evidently did not understand him. He came on to Smithfield and reported the matter to the sheriff. The sheriff immediately phoned to Four Oaks and Benson, and sent two deputies to trail the robbers.
