John Thompson Jr., 19, Burns to Death Under Flipped Car, Dec. 8, 1924

Dunn Man Burned While Under Car

Dunn, Dec. 8—John L. Thompson Jr., age 19 years, of Dunn, met a horrible death about 12:30 this morning when the Buick car in which he was riding alone turned over on the hard surfaced highway between Dunn and Duke and was burned. The unfortunate young man was caught under the car and burned beyond recognition. It is thought, however, that he was killed before being burned. While no one saw the accident, it is thought that young Thopson swerved his car to the left to run over a rabbit and in righting it lost control. A rabbit which had been run down and killed by the death car was found near the paving. The surroundings indicated that the car turned over twice before coming to a stop. Several people were attracted to the burning car, but were unable to remove the young man until after it had been burned up.
