Lt. Campbell of Greensboro Cited for Bravery in Battle, 1918

From the editorial page of the Hickory Daily Record, Nov. 18, 1918

A Greensboro Hero

First Lieutenant Robert L. Campbell, 38th infantry, performed a feat near Binarville, France, on September 27 last that won for him a citation from the commander in chief of the American armies overseas. Lieutenant Campbell “saw a runner fall wounded in the middle of a field swept by heavy machine gunfire. At imminent peril to his own life, and in full view of the enemy, he crossed the field and carried the wounded soldier to shelter.”

This young soldier performed an act that thousands of North Carolinians would have done gladly. His bravery is typical of the American army. The honor that he won is shared by his comrades.
