Lt. Thomlinson Dies in Training Accident, Brooks Field, Texas, 1918

“Former Hickory Editor Loses Son in Accident,” in the Hickory Daily Record, September 17, 1918

Lieutenant J. Wilder Tomlinson, who was killed last Thursday at Brooks Field, Texas, in an airplane accident, was a son of John S. Tomlinson of Hickory, formerly editor of the Piedmont Press and a veteran newspaper man. The father is remembered by many of the older citizens of Hickory.
Lieutenant Tomlinson had relatives throughout this section of the state and was a member of a well-known North Carolina family. He entered the aviation corps in March and was sent to Princeton and from there was transferred to the Texas field to complete his training. Mr. H.E.C. Bryant, writing in the Charlotte Observer, says he was a brilliant student in the Washington, D.C., schools.
His parents live in Washington. Young Tomlinson’s machine became unmanageable and he fell from a great height.
