Mr. Goode’s Address Enjoyed by College

Again the faculty and students of Lenoir College were privileged to enjoy a short address during the morning chapel exercises Tuesday morning. The Rev. W.O. Goode, pastor of the First Methodist church, have an interesting and encouraging talk, appealing directly to the aims and ambitions of the students before they enter life in full.

“Education,” he said, “is an absolute necessity if one would become a prosperous man or woman. Your purpose, as is the purpose of all men, is to serve mankind with the best that God gave us.” He further stated that 10 million sons of the coming generation are dead on the battlefields. That their work, the work they should have done, has fallen to us as our task in the civilization.

Mr. Goode gave the history of several eminent men who began in a humble cabin and rose to the highest. He gave the life of Garfield as an example, where a man began with nothing and accomplished everything desired. His remarks can possibly be titled: “College Men Without Money.”

“Do one thing well,” he continued. “Develop that one talent to the uttermost. Whatever your bent is, develop it with your heart, body and soul.” He also stated that he was a native of Carolina, that he came from our sister county, Caldwell. He said he was delighted with the city and that the college was a decided asset to the city and a great opportunity for young men and ladies to secure their education. He said the question was not “can a man afford to go to college, but can a man afford not to go to college.” Innumerable other beneficial and encouraging remarks were made.

Mr. Goode is an excellent orator and preacher. He carries with him that power to captivate his audience and convince them as he thinks. A unanimous rising vote of thanks was extended to Rev. Goode upon the conclusion of the address by the faculty and student body.
