Gruesome Sight In Home Where Four Found Dead, Another Near Death, Feb. 7, 1919

From the Mountaineer-Courier, as reprinted in the Jackson County Journal, Sylva, N.C., Friday, Feb. 7, 1919

Four Dead in One House

That was a gruesome sight Friday for one to look upon when there were four flu victims dead in the same small house at Hazelwood, with others of the same household at the point of death. Another death had occurred there just a few days before.

Mrs. John Allen and her infant child and a four-year-old daughter were three of the victims while her sister’s child about four years old, was the other. The sister, Mrs. James McDonald, died a few days before. These are Jackson county people and the bodies were taken to the county for interment.
