Flu Takes Mother First, Then Daughter and Finally Son, Feb. 6, 1919

From The Roanoke News, Weldon, N.C., Feb. 6, 1919

In Memory of Loved Ones

The home of Mr. J.H. Pair has been made the scene of intense sorrow and bereavement by the death of his wife and two children.

His wife, Mrs. Annie Irene, contracted influenza which developed into pneumonia, and death came quickly.

Mrs. Pair was a consistent member of the M.P. church at Hawkins’ Chapel. She was a devoted wife and mother, and will be sorely missed at her home. She was laid to rest on Sunday, Jan. 19th, near her home. The last tribute of respect was conducted by Mr. George W. Fulgham from near Weldon. Mr. Fulgham made some very feeling and appropriate remarks.

On Monday little Verla, only 8, died of the same cause. On the following Thursday, Ollie, aged 14 years, also developed into pneumonia. He was rushed to the hospital, hoping to save his life, but to no avail. He died on Friday night, and was laid to rest on Sunday, January 26th, beside his mother and little sister Verla, making three that have gone from Mr. Pair’s home in one week. Mr. Pair has the sympathy of the entire community for his loss and bereavement is beyond expression.

May the Lord bless and comfort the sad hearts of the father and four boys left to mourn their loss, and may they be true to the end when they shall all meet again.
