Road Matters Are Before Commissioners

Newton, Sept. 6—The board of county commissioners met in regular session with the following members present: Osborne Brown, chairman, D. Elias Sigmon, Jay S. Wilfong, John F. Holler and W.S. Troup transacted the following business:

On motion it was ordered that the salary of county judge be fixed at $60, and the salary of county solicitor at $50 per month, beginning September 1, 1919.

On motion it was ordered that petition be granted for change in state road, Caldwell township, beginning at Newton road near Mark Hick’s place, passing over the lands of D.F. Abernethy, T.L. Crouse, Cole Williams, Avery Ballard, B.B. Deal, M.E. Hewitt, Bob Link, Mrs. Anna Boyd, J.S. Goodson, Joe Goodson, C.L. Harris, Andrew Clippard, D.P. Turbyfill, W.S. Turbyfill, Ottis Hovis, J.P. Abernethy and J.F. Goodson. Road to be worked out by petitioners without expense to the county. Petitioners to pay all damages of any and said road to be accepted as a public road upon recommendations of township supervisor and action of this board.

On motion it was ordered that $1,000 be paid Hickory township road commission on account.

On motion it was ordered that $500 be paid Newton township on account.

On motion it was ordered that petition be granted for a public road in Bandy’s township, beginning at Pink Crow’s, south end of bridge, Jacobs Fork river, passing over lands of Bob Gilbert and Frank Hicks, ending at Cook’s store. Petitioners to work out road without expense to county and survey made by T.L. Bandy, pay all damages if any and to be accepted as a public road upon recommendation of road supervisor and action of this board.

On motion it was ordered that the proposition of the Hickory Chero Cola Bottling Co. to erect sign boards or guide posts, showing direction and distance at all cross roads and forks of roads in Catawba county be accepted, they agreeing to do this work without expense to the county in such a manner as to comply with the public laws 1917 chapter 24. It is understood that the board is not responsible for erection of sign boards in Newton and Hickory townships, this matter being in the hands of the road commissioners of the respective townships.

Petition received for change in public road leading from corporate limits of the town of Claremont, Cline’s township, on Claremont bridge road, passing over lands of C.E. Setzer, Mrs. Emma Little, H.P. Pope, Miss Jane Sigmon, D.M. Moser, John Sigmon, J.E. Little, and Louisa Abernethy. On motion petition was received, ordered to be filed, advertised and surveyed and to be acted upon at next regular meeting.

Petition for change in Brookford bridge, to build, construct and maintain a double track bridge in place of the single track bridge now located across the South Fork river, received and on motion was filed and ordered to be acted upon at future meeting.
