Wilmington, Sept. 20—A general strike of skilled workmen
went into effect at the plant of the Carolina Shipbuilding Corporation at 10
a.m. today when over 1,000 men quit work as a protest against alleged
discrimination in favor of negroes. Practically every craft in the yard is
affected. The strike vote was taken at a secret meeting in the court house last
night and 270 votes were cast in favor of the walkout and seven against the
action.
