Enrollment at Hickory White Schools Increased, Sept. 9, 1919

From Hickory Daily Record, Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1919

Large Increase in Hickory Schools

With an enrollment of 1,079 children, the Hickory public schools began the fall term yesterday with prospects for 1,200 before the end of two weeks. The North school was most crowded of any of the buildings, the fifth and third grades being the largest, the fifth having 53 students and the third 49.

The colored school has 180 enrolled, about the same as last year, but the 899 enrolled at the white schools is about 50 more than on the first day last year. Superintendent Carver will prepare for the Record a table of the children by grades and schools, but this will not be done before Friday or Saturday, when more of the pupils are at their desks.

The third grades in the white schools prevented over-crowding in these rooms, the third at the high school taking care of a number of children.

Rev. W.W. Rowe delivered the talk at chapel exercises at the high school at 10:15 this morning.
Recitations already have begun and the students will not lose three or four hours of the first day, as has been the custom everywhere in the past.
