Gov. Bickett to
Interfere
Tom Bost gives us inside information to the effect that Gov.
Bickett may take a hand in the Charlotte street car strike by summoning Ben and
Buck Duke, who own a big share of Southern Public Utilities stock, for a
conference. He’s going to find out if they want to operate street cars in North
Carolina, and if so, is going to demand a satisfactory working condition
between them and their employees.
Regardless of the outcome of the Charlotte strike, state
officials should always be on alert to prevent a recurrence of such trouble as
happened in the Mecklenburg county seat last week. When possible disorder is
threatened, Gubernatorial interference should follow, and force both sides to
abide by any decision a disinterested committee should make. The public isn’t
so interested in the conflict between labor and capital as it is in the
protection of human lives.
